The Town Supervisor presides at the Town Board meetings and may be assigned certain powers of administration and supervision by the Town Board. The office is an elected office for a 2-year term and applicant must be a resident of the Town.
The Supervisor may appoint committees of Town Board members to make studies and report back with recommendations.
The Supervisor is a member of the Town Board and must vote on every matter before the Town Board and may move or second resolutions.
The Supervisor may appoint a Deputy Supervisor who has no vote unless they are a Town Board member.
The Supervisor prepares the agenda for all Town Board meetings.
The Supervisor is allowed to appoint a Bookkeeper or a Clerk and that appointment is strictly the Town Supervisor’s with the exception that the salary is decided by the Town Board.
The Town Supervisor is the Chief Financial Officer or treasurer for a town of the second class, population less than 10,000, and those duties cannot be delegated. When a federal decennial census shows that the population of a town of the second class is over 10,000 people, its classification automatically changes to a town of the first class. The Town Board may then establish the office of Comptroller and appoint someone to the position who would then perform the accounting duties as the accounting officer.
